DOPE stands for Data On Previous Engagements. It is the written record of what your rifle actually does with a specific load: the elevation and wind corrections you have personally confirmed at distance, as opposed to what a ballistic calculator predicts. When a shooter says they are running their dope, they mean corrections they trust because they already proved them on a range.

What goes into it

DOPE is specific to one combination of things. Change any of them and the data moves:

The rifle. Barrel length and manufacture change velocity. Two rifles with identical markings can shoot to different corrections.
The ammunition. Different loads shoot differently, and the same load varies lot to lot. Serious shooters log the lot number.
The optic. Record corrections in the units your turrets adjust in, mils or MOA, and note whether you dialed or held.
Conditions. Air density changes with altitude, temperature, and pressure. Data from a cold morning at sea level is not data for a hot day at elevation.

How shooters record it

The traditional tool is the data book: one page per session with date, conditions, load, distance, the correction fired, and where the rounds landed. The field version is the DOPE card, a condensed chart of distances and corrections kept on the rifle. Ballistic apps are the modern draft, and good shooters treat them exactly that way. The app predicts. The range confirms. Only confirmed numbers make the card.

Predicted data gets you close. Confirmed data gets you hits. The difference is a range session at real distance, writing down the truth even when it disagrees with the app. When the two argue, the impacts win, and you correct the calculator to match the rifle, never the other way around.
