Mk18 Mod 1 (SOPMOD Block II) reference build
NSWC Crane's answer to the MP5 problem: keep the M4A1, cut the barrel to 10.3 inches, and tune it until it runs. The Mod 1, Daniel Defense's FDE RIS II floating over a low profile gas block is the configuration everyone pictures, and dressed in the full SOPMOD Block II accessory kit it becomes the most-photographed SOF carbine of the post 2010 era. This loadout is what forums call the "Mk18 Mod 2" no such designation exists at Crane; it's a Mod 1 wearing Block II gear, and this page documents exactly that.
Parts
| Part category | Part | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Upper receiver | Colt Keyhole, AF | Colt Stripped Upper or any Keyhole upper is fine |
| Lower receiver | Colt M4A1 lower | Substitutes: Colt 6920-series as the civilian Colt route; any mil-spec lower for shooter builds. Strictly speaking the Mk18 is the upper (CQBR) — Crane ran them on standard M4A1 lowers. A 10.3" upper on a rifle lower is an SBR: Form 1 first, or build on a pistol lower |
| Barrel | Colt 10.3" Government profile, chrome-lined, button-rifled, 1:7, carbine gas | Substitutes: DD 10.3" CHF (the DD commercial spec — CHF is the tell), Criterion, Centurion, Colt, FN. Original Crane barrels were 14.5" Colt M4 barrels cut down — the Colt roll marks left with the muzzle end. Current-spec gas port is 0.070", up from the original 0.062" [VERIFY] |
| Gas block | Low-profile (Mk12-pattern — Badger Ordnance / DD) — FSP deleted | Substitutes: any quality low-pro. The deleted front sight tower is the fastest visual tell of a Mod 1 |
| Rail | Daniel Defense Mk18 RIS II, 9.55", FDE (NSN 1005-01-548-1385) | Substitutes: none for correctness; budget quad rails get the silhouette only. Do not confuse with the 12.25" M4A1 Block II RIS II — same family, different rail. Block II CQBR uppers with this rail started fielding around 2010 |
| BCG | Colt or FN full-auto profile, C158 bolt, MPI/HP tested | Substitutes: Toolcraft / no-logo C158 for shooter builds |
| Charging handle | Standard GI | Substitutes: PRI M84 Gas Buster (military latch) — heavily documented on suppressed guns |
| Buffer | H (M855-class loads) | H2 with Mk 262. The 10.3 is a tuning balance — gas port, buffer, and ammo move together. Preferred load is Mk 262 Mod 1, the Black Hills 77gr SMK developed for the Mk 12 program |
| Stock | LMT ("Crane stock") | Substitutes: none for correctness. LMT made the Crane stock until ~2010; B5 took the contract in 2011 — either is correct on a Block II-era gun depending on your target year. |
| Grip | A2 | Substitutes: TangoDown and Magpul grips appear on user-modified guns; A2 is the issue baseline |
| Trigger | Standard M4A1 fire control group | Substitutes: mil-spec single-stage for semi-auto builds; Geissele SSA if you want the upgrade path |
| Muzzle device | SureFire SF3P/SF4P (later Block II) or KAC M4QD (early) | Substitutes: SF Warcomp; plain A2 on guns not running a can. Block II initially carried the KAC NT4 suppressor over from Block I; the SureFire SOCOM556-RC took over after SureFire won the SOCOM contract — RC2 is the modern buy |
| Sights | KAC micro folding front (P/N 99051) + KAC folding rear, taupe | Substitutes: Magpul MBUS Pro for shooter builds. Both the 200–600m micro rear and the full-size 300m rear are documented in Block II imagery. The taupe KAC folders are the Block II signature |
| Optic | EOTech EXPS3-0 (SU-231A) or Elcan SpecterDR 1-4x (SU-230) with piggybacked MRDS | Substitutes: earlier guns wore the EOTech 553 (SU-231); ACOG SU-237 documented; G33 magnifier behind the EOTech. The 2015-era "most popular" SF setup was the SU-230 + MRDS combo |
| Laser & light | ATPIAL AN/PEQ-15 (LA-5) + Insight WMX200 or SureFire M600 Scout | Substitutes: ATPIAL-C is the civilian stand-in; full-power LA-5s don't hit the commercial market. The initial Block II SU-233 light was an unloved 125-lumen incandescent; the WMX200 replaced it ~2010 and Scouts spread through unit-level buys anyway |
| Vertical grip | TangoDown battle grip (tan) or KAC Grip-Pod | Substitutes: Magpul RVG holds the silhouette. The KAC broomstick is the Block I / Mod 0 look — wrong era for this build |
| Accessories | TangoDown or KAC rail panels (tan), Vickers two-point sling | Panel color and coverage vary gun to gun in period photos — match your reference image, not a rulebook |
